Staking Out a New Home

Staking Out a New Home

Graded red-clay house pad freshly hydroseeded with bright green mulch under a blue sky with clouds, ready for staking

Construction stakeout is where a design on paper becomes real on the ground. This June our crew laid out a new house on a pad that had been hydroseeded right before we staked it, which made for a wild-looking color palette in our photo. We had to wait on the hydroseed crew that day, but the picture made it worth it.

During stakeout, our crews use a Leica TS16 robotic total station to set precise marks so builders know exactly where foundations, corners and improvements belong. Getting it right at this stage saves time, money and headaches later in construction.

Fieldwork comes with surprises, too. This spring one of our field crews found baby armadillos emerging from the ground all around them!
